Rare Red Toon, also known as Toona Tree, Chinese Toon, and Chinese Mohagony, is a very rare small tree/shrub known for it's nutritious vegetable-like leaves that are high in protein and Vitamin A. Their unique flavor is somewhat spicy and resembles browned onions. Toon's edible parts are the young tender shoots and leaves. The red leaf flavor is considered much butter than the green leaf.

Native to eastern and southeastern Asia (North Korea, China, Nepal, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia) and is a temperate-climate deciduous member of the mahogany family. The wood is highly sought after and is used to create the bodies of electric guitars. Grown in full sun exposure, Chinese Red Toon typically grows 15-20 feet tall but often is cut to the ground to maintain an interesting and colorful bonsai-esque lower planting. The 1-2 foot long pointed oblong leaflets emerge in many tones of red, bright pink, then turn to green with age. Summer flowers have lovely pale pink petals.

    Great tree!

Great tree! I love the structure. Mine is a few years old and is about 14 ft tall. My only issue is I’ve never had it give red leaves or sprouts. 😔

    Awesome!

Just started getting into gardening and saw this plant and had to have it. We don’t eat alliums, but this plant is the primary substitute for it and I thought it would be neat to have one in the yard. When it came, it was SMALL. Only had 2 leaves… but I potted it until I could figure out where to put it. It stayed there for a good 3 weeks and it grew FAST! Finally got it in the ground (roots were everywhere!) and it’s doing well. Mostly. The squirrels keep on digging up the ground near it’s base. And knocked off 2 large branches. It’s too big to cover with a wire waste basket so I’m hoping it’ll bounce back soon without it! It’s also really hot (~100) so that might be why it isn’t growing as fast.

    Real Deal

My only qualm is that the plant delivered was about 1.5 inches tall. It still had its cotyledons and three tiny adult leaves. For the price, this isn’t nearly the best deal available. Other than that, the plant is in fact Toon, and for an obscure tree from China I can’t really complain that I was able to get it. :) Sow Exotic has one of the best availability lists in the contiguous US and a killer good team of employees. Their packing is also immaculate… so definitely do it!
